July is the month that the judges of IPRA’s Golden World Awards for Excellence (GWA) convene in a central location to determine that year’s winners. So, too, this year, when we came together in Belgrade, Serbia and reviewed, discussed and, eventually, judged the finalists in each category. Discretion stops me from enthusing about specific winners. On 13 October, all winners will be announced and celebrated at the annual IPRA GWA Gala. This will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria. A compelling city to visit, I can say from personal experience, and even more so now that you can join us there for a great and inspiring evening. All information about booking your Gala tickets will be posted shortly at www.ipra.org

Last month, I sat down for lunch in Amsterdam with Inna Shevchenko, the premier founder of the women’s activist group FEMEN. We hadn’t met before, only communicated by email, and our initial conversation was typically characterized by finding a common shared interest. This quickly and predictably centered on the occasion for which we met, the awarding of the 2016 IPRA President Award to Inna and the activists of FEMEN. Inna had come to Amsterdam to receive the award during a small ceremony we held in the afternoon.

On May 15 the term closes for entries for IPRA’s Golden World Awards. These Awards are among the most prestigious in the field of global professional communications. Just recently, I was honoured to be able to be present when Russia’s Eventiada Awards - supported by the country’s PR association - announced a cooperation agreement with IPRA. It is a further proof of the relevance of the GWA for public relations practitioners.

I was reading a post about a phenomenon the actress Kristen Bell called ‘pink sourcing’: that is the hiring of women for less money, less benefits and lower career recognition than men. It has also been described as a form of profitable outsourcing of jobs without leaving the country (Gloria Feldt www.motto.time.com). Former President Obama believed the non-existence of a US female president was symptomatic of the trouble society has seeing powerful women.
