IPRA and the academic community working together to set ethical guidelines for the usage of AI in communications2024-03-06T15:47:45+00:002024-03-19T03:54:51+00:00Philip Sheppardhttps://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/author/admin_p/https://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/ipra-and-the-academic-community-working-together-to-set-ethical-guidelines-for-the-usage-of-ai-in-communications/
The Board of the International Public Relations Association chaired by IPRA President, Nataša Pavlović Bujas, has set up a Committee with prominent academics and practitioners to create Ethical Guidelines for the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in communications. Trustworthy and ethical PR in the AI era is the IPRA President's theme for 2024. These new comprehensive guidelines will help practitioners navigate the emerging world of generative AI. This may be a first step towards its regulation.

Nataša Pavlović Bujas clarifies: “This is an outstanding example of collaboration between the academic community and practitioners on regulating critically important aspects of our work. This collaboration is beyond narrowing the gap between practice and academia: it is about collaboration to anticipate the future and define the borderlines for AI usage applicable on a global scale.”

“Working together is essential if we are to integrate best practices with the latest trends identified by the academic community,” explains Bujas.

Members of the Committee are:

Prof. Dr. Dejan Verčič, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Message from the IPRA President: My IPRA journey March 20242024-03-06T08:01:33+00:002024-03-19T03:46:09+00:00Janice Hillshttps://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/author/admin_j/https://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/message-from-the-ipra-president-my-ipra-journey-march-2024/
Dear friends and colleagues,

February was special to me because it was the month of my formal inauguration as IPRA President 2024. The event was held on 9 February in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce in my hometown of Belgrade. Since then, and indeed from the first announcement about the presidency, I have often been asked to explain how I became to be an IPRA President, coming from a small country of specific heritage. My IPRA journey has been ongoing for 12 years and this is my story.

My IPRA journey begins with an award...

The first step was in 2012 when my agency Blumen Group entered the Golden World Awards. We received not just a win in the category but the 2012 Grand Prix. All this with our first ever entry! Winning was wonderful but even better was my experience at the GWA Gala that year with its warm welcome, a feeling of belonging, and a real celebration of excellence. From that time I have made it a point to always try to attend the GWA Gala. The 2024 GWA Entry window is open. Come and make your first step to an award right here.

…And then a membership and a GWA judge…

After that wonderful experience I became an IPRA member and you can easily do the same here. I enjoyed the immediate member benefits of networking with other PR people, a professional endorsement of my ethical credentials by following the IPRA Code, professional development from IPRA’s Thought Leadership essays and webinars, and the ability to participate in the association.

Indeed, my first participation was when I was invited to join the IPRA GWA jury. This is an inspiring activity, as I got to see great campaigns from my PR colleagues from all over the world. I have been a jury member for over 11 years now, and still feel the same excitement when reading new campaigns. Once you become an IPRA member you may join the IPRA jury too.

…Next came the Boardroom…

For several years, I was a business owner, the mother of a teenage boy, a coach and mentor, and a Worldcom Group partner and board member. There was limited time. But finally, 5 years ago I joined the IPRA Board, starting a new phase in my IPRA journey. As I began to understand the complexity of a global organization, I found it helped to develop my personal capacity and cultural intelligence. These skills are of increasing relevance as the world faces huge migrations and cultural challenges everywhere.

…And so to be the President

Finally, at the end of last year, I was honoured to be elected by IPRA Board members as President 2024. Honoured, but also inspired to serve and contribute to our organization. An organisation that will celebrate 70 years since its foundation in 2025. As a symbol of that consistency, vision and longevity you will notice in this month’s photograph that I wear the IPRA Chain of Office. The Chain is forged in Turkish silver gilt and bears the names of my predecessors: because every person matters. Your ideas and contributions are welcome, feel free to contact me. I am proud to serve and invite you to join with me and all of the IPRA global community.

Kind regards,

Message from the IPRA President: Who will rebuild trust? February 20242024-02-01T10:32:04+00:002024-03-19T03:47:48+00:00Janice Hillshttps://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/author/admin_j/https://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/message-from-the-ipra-president-who-will-rebuild-trust-february-2024/
Dear colleagues and fellows,

are you familiar with this year’s Davos conclusions? At the 54th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum last month the conclusion was that the biggest global risk in 2024 and beyond will be misinformation and disinformation. I am wondering, does this surprise us?

Trust is the ultimate question

Even before Davos, the latest Edelman Trust Barometer had revealed a new paradox in our global society. There is a collision of trust, with innovation, and politics. And even before we heard this from the Barometer, didn’t we as PR professionals already know what is coming? Have we not been dealing daily with the pernicious effects of misinformation and disinformation?

Is a lack of trust rooted in technical innovation?

Over the 30 years of my professional career, both in management and communications, we’ve been cautioned about the perils of technology. The Internet was the first threat with fake websites and phishing emails. Then we learned that our mobile phones were letting Google, Amazon and other tech giants know everything about us. We discovered that social media, a media policed effectively by no one, is the foremost means for our youth for communication and news. Not to mention, a new channel for bullying and intimidation.

And just as we were starting to use coping mechanisms for all the above, along comes artificial intelligence and the world’s best opportunity yet for fakery and disinformation.

A new optimism: how do we now cope?

Firstly, we need to tell ourselves that the only thing that should threaten us is ourselves. We must not stop learning, adapting, and improving.

Secondly, we must not allow companies nor individuals to remain silent when it comes to their responsibility for technological and trust-relevant changes in our society. We have the power in our democratic hands. In 2024 uniquely there will be elections involving over 4.5 billion people in more than 60 countries.

Finally, we must be smart in how we direct our efforts. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and the creator of ChatGPT has a sign above his desk that reads: No-one knows what happens next. Well, I say that gives us a direction. We already know that people trust their peers the most and that people will expect governments and communicators to help fight unwelcome change.

In 2024 we are witnessing the raising of PR to the next level and as its practitioners we must act. AI may add to fakery, but it will not replace our human care for each other.

Kind regards,

Matthew Cossel has been promoted to Permanent Representative to the UN from his position as a Youth Representative and both Alexa Moyer and Diya Narayan have been announced as the newest UN Youth Representatives, filling a role held by Cossel for five years.

“IPRA’s relationship with the UN is a key value of our organization,” said James McQueeny, IPRA’s Head Permanent Representative to the UN and board member. “Matt’s previous work with our organization, as well as his background working for the UN directly, are invaluable as we continue to bolster our presence at the UN and its sister organizations. We are equally as excited to bring on Alexa and Diya as our latest Youth Representatives to the UN, reaffirming our commitment to youth empowerment. They will be valuable assets to our growing team.”

Following five years as a youth representative, Cossel will be stepping into a leadership role with the organization, leading IPRA’s relationship with the UN’s Department of Global Communications and overseeing the team’s youth representative programme. Cossel is a UN veteran, working as both an intern and conference consultant with the UN’s Department of Global Communications’ Civil Society Office. He has worked in PR for more than 5 years and is currently a senior PR professional with a prominent New York City PR firm.

As youth representatives, Moyer and Narayan’s role will include spreading news and information from the United Nations to IPRA members and the general public relations community with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals. While performing general work by assisting in meetings and contributing to informal discussions, Youth Representatives provide valuable input and contributions to important UN working areas and youth issues.

Moyer is from northeastern Pennsylvania and moved to Connecticut for college where she’s stayed ever since. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from University of New Haven with a degree in legal studies and minors in both political science and professional writing, Moyer began her master of strategic communication and public relations at Sacred Heart University which she is set to finish in December 2023.

Narayan is from Roxbury, New Jersey, and is a first-year student at Lehigh University in the School of Business, majoring in marketing with a minor in applied statistics. Narayan carries a heavy interest in human rights and addressing issues that emerge from the media. She is currently conducting research within the Business School regarding Generative AI in the marketing and management world.

Message from the IPRA President: Welcome to the Future: January 20242024-01-02T09:10:45+00:002024-03-19T03:48:41+00:00Janice Hillshttps://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/author/admin_j/https://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/message-from-the-ipra-president-welcome-to-the-future-january-2024/
My dear friends and colleagues, at the beginning of my presidential year, first let me say a big thank you to outgoing President Dr. Anne-Gret Iturriaga Abarzua. She has led IPRA with style and intelligence throughout her year. And as we enter a new year maybe, just maybe, we are entering a new era.

That is the era of Artificial Intelligence. That’s what we hear and read daily. But what does it mean? Are we ready? Do we have the capacity to cope with the rapidly evolving landscape of AI?

Why are we here?

I would like to discuss with you not only a revision of our current strategies and tools in the light of AI, but the very purpose of our profession.

When talking about AI we mean assistance in content creation, in content optimization, and in content distribution. But we also must consider AI’s understanding of platform-specific dynamics, and its ability for advanced analytics. All these are advantages in efficiency which will save time and energy.

AI and PR guidelines

To ensure that your communications are trustful and ethical you may rely both on the original IPRA Code of Conduct and the new IPRA AI and PR Guidelines. The Guidelines are built upon a fundamental recognition. AI learns from the Internet and thus it suffers from the flaws of misinformation on the Internet. And remember also that AI is not really intelligent or able to empathise or operate with emotion.

A new hope

But what should we do with that saved time and energy? Let us address that first question: the purpose of our profession. If AI offers us more time, and we continue to take an holistic approach to communication, then we should be able to focus on a deeper understanding of human needs and human behaviour. Combine that focus with our current purpose to create messages that influence change, and we can hope that future changes bring about a better world. Indeed this is the very creation of a better world. Einstein once said that every creature on the planet leave traces of its existence, but only human beings are able to leave traces of their creation.

It is not the content that I see and enjoy every year when we celebrate winners at the IPRA Golden World Awards Gala, but the activism, passion, and influence leading to the creation of change in real life. That is why the Golden World Awards are more than just prizes. They are recognition.

So what can we conclude from all this about AI? I believe that the AI era has the potential to bring communications to a new level of importance. And we must be fully aware of our purpose and our impact in this new era.

Kind regards,

The year 2023 is drawing to a close, and with it my presidency of this esteemed association. I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you working in communications, those before us and those who will come after us. To connect people, ideas, companies, NGOs, countries, and continents, skills such as empathy, knowledge and understanding are essential. You have those skills.

The IPRA President’s Award

It is a fine tradition for the IPRA President to honour an organisation or individual who has made an “outstanding contribution to better world understanding” each year. The IPRA President’s Award was established in 1977. Previous recipients of the award include the 30% Club, Zeit Online, the International Red Cross, the Nobel Foundation, UNESCO, Amnesty International, Transparency International, the WWF, The Economist and the National Geographic Society.

I chose Dr. Nicole LePera, the holistic psychologist who founded the global SelfHealersCircle in 2018. Her outstanding contribution to better world understanding is her realisation that before people can understand the world, they need to understand themselves. Dr. Nicole has a deep inner knowledge of the importance of responsibility, of standing up for one’s principles and of the fulfilment of sharing one’s wisdom with others. One can see how she personally cares about the team and the community she created, by acknowledging member’s vulnerability, honesty and braveness on taking their destiny in their own hands.

Share & care

I am convinced that our world and our future can only get better if people realise that we are all connected, that we are all one, that we all live on one earth, and that we need to work together. I invite you to listen to your body. Connect with yourself, with other people, and with the world. When you are aware of yourself, you become aware of others and the world around you. We need this inner and outer connection as a prerequisite for our own healing and healing the planet. My motto for this year was “share & care”. I hope this has shown through in every one of my twelve messages.

Now it is time to introduce to you my dear colleague and friend Nataša Pavlović Bujas from Serbia who will serve as the IPRA President 2024. I am looking forward to the new year ahead of us and wish you all the best for yourself, your loved ones and for the aspirations you have in becoming the best version of you.

IPRA launches AI and PR Guidelines2023-11-27T10:23:48+00:002024-03-19T03:49:55+00:00Philip Sheppardhttps://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/author/admin_p/https://www.ipra.org/news/press-room/ipra-launches-ai-and-pr-guidelines/
Consistent with its mission for intellectual leadership in global communication, IPRA has launched a set of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and PR Guidelines. The guidelines starting point is to recall that AI content has the potential both to enhance public relations, and the potential for bias, misuse, deception, and harm.

The guidelines take 5 of the 18 articles of the IPRA ethical code of conduct and interpret implementation with respect to AI and PR. For example, under code article four to be open and transparent the guidelines urge PR practitioners to disclose when they are using AI. Equally, under article seven of the IPRA code to ensure truth and accuracy, the guidelines ask that AI content is fact-checked by humans. The set of 11 guidelines can be found here.

The 2023 Guidelines complement IPRA’s history of codes of conduct. Throughout its existence IPRA has sought to provide intellectual leadership for the public relations profession. A key part of this is the development of codes and guidelines seeking to provide an ethical framework for the activities of the profession. Upon joining IPRA, members undertake to uphold these codes and in doing so benefit from the ethical climate that they create. The current code, reviewed in 2020, consolidates the 1961 Code of Venice, the 1965 Code of Athens and the 2007 Code of Brussels. The IPRA Climate Change Guidelines were launched at the start of 2023.
