Message from the IPRA President: Sustainability and risk  October 2022

Hello from Tokyo. As many of you know, last month between the 16 – 25  September was this year’s Global Goals Week. This is a shared commitment between 170+ partners across civil society, business, academia, and the UN system to accelerate action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What did you do in your country? In Japan, there were events held throughout the country. In Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan, a large-scale event was held at 13 venues over nine days. With a vision to both raise awareness of the SDGs within the public, as well as the co-creation of opportunities to act, there was an impressive total of 24 separate programmes.

According to analysis by B4Ukraine, a coalition of Ukrainian and international civil society organisations, three-quarters of multinationals remain in Russia, even after 200 days of Russian aggression and the war in Ukraine. To date, 105 companies have exited the Russian market while over 1610 international companies continue to do business in Russia many of which are multinationals. Message from the IPRA President: A sizzling September 2022

Hello from Tokyo. It has been a hot and humid summer in Tokyo. It was also hot and humid last year, when the Tokyo Olympics were held, and for that reason, the marathon venue was changed to Hokkaido, which is typically cooler than the capital. According to the Japan Weather Association, the average summer temperature in Japan is increasing at a rate of 1.16°C per 100 years. Indeed, compared to the early twentieth century, the annual number of extremely hot days (a daily temperature of 35°C or higher) has increased 3.3 times, and tropical nights (daily temperature of 25°C or higher) has increased 2.7 times.

Alasdair Scott Sutherland In Memoriam

IPRA pays its respects to Alasdair Sutherland who has died at the age of 76. Joining IPRA in 1985, Alasdair was President 2001 and subsequently a Member Emeritus. Prior to being President, Alasdair had served for many years on the IPRA Council and Board. During his presidential year he launched the Campaign for Media Transparency which resulted in an IPRA Charter seeking to end the practise of paid-for editorial, and he created the first five-year strategic plan, an impressive 59-page document encapsulating IPRA’s diverse global activities within a single vision. That vision included the relaunch of FrontLine, a quarterly magazine of global PR trends. The IPRA President’s Award is made annually for an outstanding contribution to better world understanding. Alasdair’s inspired choice was The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Committee who that year had reached out all over the world in preparation for the Jubilee of 2002.

UK adds PR to list of sanctioned services to Russia

The UK government has made an explicit inclusion of public relations services to the list of sanctions against the Russian Federation. This new regulation is now in force as part of the UK Sanctions and Money Laundering Act 2018. It references Professional and Business Services and thus effectively bans UK-based PR firms, along with accountants and management consultants, from providing any professional services to Russia-based clients. The legislation applies to any prospective new clients as well as to any existing clients. This law overrides any contracts agencies may have in place with Russian clients.
