IPRA applauds launch of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance

The International Public Relations Association (IPRA) applauds the launch of Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance, a new and inclusive platform established through United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution 79/325, marked by a landmark high-level multi-stakeholder informal meeting held yesterday during the UN’s annual high-level week in New York City. IPRA reaffirms its commitment to the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in communications and journalism globally through the work its done through its AI-focused committee, with its latest Gold Paper titled Ethical standards and guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence in public relations.

The Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance represents a pivotal moment in international cooperation on AI, bringing together governments, scientists, the tech community, private sector, and civil society to collectively shape the future of AI governance, marking the first time the UN General Assembly convenes such a broad and diverse group under one roof to address the global implications of AI.. The meeting yesterday built on the momentum of the Global Digital Compact and the Pact for the Future, reaffirming the UN’s central role as a convener of inclusive and accountable dialogue.

Throughout its existence, IPRA has sought to provide intellectual leadership for the public relations profession. A key aspect of this has been the development of Codes and Guidelines aimed at establishing an ethical framework for the profession's activities. Upon joining IPRA, all members commit to upholding the Code, benefiting from the ethical environment they foster. For the past fifty years, IPRA has supplemented its Codes and Guidelines with occasional Gold Papers.

In response to the emergence and widespread adoption of generative artificial intelligence in the 2020s, IPRA published the IPRA AI and PR Guidelines in October 2023. Additionally, it established a joint committee of academics and practitioners to outline Ethical standards and guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence in public relations. In July 2024, IPRA launched an AI Chapter. This Gold Paper provides a snapshot of the situation in 2024 and outlines proposals for proactive and responsible behaviour in public relations.
