As much as 12% of the population have no access to clean drinking water. Water-related diseases resulting from this account for more deaths in a single year than car accidents and AIDS combined. Not only is there a need to generate awareness on this issue, but more importantly, to encourage a unified response to this life-threatening reality. World Water Day was used as an anchor for the World Water Council to become the global voice of authority rallying for water security. Over 1,500 news pieces were generated in just 10 days reaching a total audience of over 1 billion people.
